Science online: Parts of the Plant CellBoth plants and animals are made of cells. Plant and animal cells share many similar characteristics and many of the same organelles. An organelle is a specialized unit within the cell that performs a specific function. Organelles act in much the same way our heart, liver, and lungs do. Each organ in our body has a specific function that it carries out to help us survive. Organelles act in the same way. Some of the organelles that both plant and animal cells share include nuclei, ribosomes, and Golgi bodies.
There are, however, major differences between plant and animal cells in both their structure and their organelles. The three main differences are cell walls, vacuoles, and chloroplasts.
