MYP Assessment: Integrity

Academic Integrity: A Culture of Trust and Learning

The move to online teaching, learning and assessment casts a light on practices that promote academic integrity. The root of assessment is "assidere - to sit beside". It represents a relationship, or conversation about learning. Assessment is something powerful we do with students, not to them. 

The guidance below-left is based on WAB's policies and practices, aligned with IB guidance. Below-right is an excerpt from a special IB document related to school campus closure. 

The Golden Rule: Communicate Trust. 

  • I trust that you will do this honestly. 
  • I trust that you will represent your work fairly. 
  • I trust that you will seek help and take action on feedback. 

As we plan to assess our learners, consider: 

  • Does this task suit the online mode of learning? 
    • If not, is there another way to meet the same objectives?
    • Do my colleagues have examples or solutions? 
  • Is the scale of the task fair
    • It is much harder to do this alone, online. 
    • We don't need to assess all of the content of a unit. 
  • If it is an ongoing task, how might I see progress towards the final product?
    • Drafts and student-owned feedback
    • Self- and peer-assessment
  • How does the language of the "classroom" communicate trust?
    • Focus on the learning vs work
    • Expectations for learning, rather than of compliance

Are "tests" really necessary? 

  • Timed, paper-pen tests can be very hard to administer fairly, across timezones. 
  • Using students' webcams as proctors is not appropriate
  • Tests are not required in MYP. Focus on the intention of the objective. Is there an alternative? 
  • Education Perfect has a "monitored assessment mode" for timed online assessment. 
  • Conversations, discussions, live interactions might be more authentic.
