Sustainability: FOEN25 - Sustainability and Offsetting

WAB Alumni will be agents of sustainable and ethical approaches to living & learning.

Carbon Offsetting at FOEN25

Metanoia, our offsetting parners, helped us calculate the footprint of travel to the event. With their help, we purchased 165 tonnes CO2e of certified offsetting to support an afforestation project in Hunan, China, and a peatland preservation project in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

  • 98.6% of these emissions came from air transport.

Sustainability Measures at FOEN25:

  • All participants were reminded to bring their own bottles etc in their registration communications.
  • The programme included a whole stream from sustainable leadership, that promoted meaningful actions and discussions from WAB and participating schools/presenters.
  • Food services (Sodexo) aimed to provide a balanced, high-quality menu with provisions for all dietary needs and cultures.
  • All food not taken at service points was given to WAB facilities and operational teams, so not wasted. The ony food waste was from that scraped from plates to bins.
  • Offsetting the transportation footprint was important to us, so thank-you for the help with that.
  • WAB provided electric bus transportation for all participants to and from four conference hotels, as well as for a large visiting school group.
  • We also offered a low-cost online ticket to include the key foenspirations and a curation of online-presented sessions. This was to include those who could not travel or chose not to travel.
  • Different from FOEN19 - there was no production of single-use clothing (event T-shirts) or wasteful "swag" from the WAB side. Only high-quality event lanyards were produced, as memorabilia for participants and volunteers. Teams such as WABX Productions used their own uniform, which is used for all events.
  • We did produce a deck of cards as conference swag, which was designed to be used during and after the conference. This is a high-quality item that will be used again in workshops here, and which participants appreciated as a tool they can use back in their own schools.
  • Chris (thank-you!) monitored waste, water and energy use, which will give us good targets to learn from.
