Who is a Common Sense Educator?

Common Sense Educators are committed to helping kids and schools thrive in the digital age. Anyone who is an educator -- whether a classroom teacher, administrator, tech coach, librarian, homeschool teacher, preservice teacher, parent coordinator, or community partner-- can become a Common Sense Educator.

Earn a badge that publicly affirms your commitment to helping students think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate.
Build your confidence teaching digital citizenship and integrating technology into your classroom, school, or district.

How do I earn recognition as a Common Sense Educator?

The Common Sense Recognition Program provides a personalized roadmap for your professional growth! You can become a Common Sense Educator in three steps: LEARN, DO, REFLECT.

Criteria and resources for the three steps are outlined below. Completing these prerequisites should take approximately four to six hours, while the actual application will take an additional five minutes.

Criteria must be completed during the current school year. Applications are rolling. If approved, you earn a Common Sense Educator badge that expires in June 2020. Please apply anytime before June 30, 2019.

Bullying is a serious, long-standing social problem that now occurs in digital spaces as well as physical ones. But, contrary to what you might have heard or read, it isn’t just a youth problem, it isn’t getting worse, and it isn’t more of a problem online than offline. Because of the rise of social media in the middle of the last decade, bullying and peer harassment have been getting a lot of news coverage, so – rather than increased bullying – what we’re really seeing is increased attention to it and a lot more concern about it.

MediaSmart: Pornography
Young people today are exposed to a plethora of sexual imagery in media – both online and off. This section looks at potential impacts of exposure to pornography on the development of healthy sexuality and offers tips for protecting young children and educating older kids.
Cyberbullying Common Sense Media
Lessons on this topic teach students about the effects of digital drama, cyberbullying, and hate speech on both themselves and their larger communities. Students explore how individual actions -- negative and positive, intentional and unintentional -- can affect their peers and others.

Internet Addiction
Dr. Kimberly Young is a licensed psychologist and has been an internationally known expert on Internet addiction over the past 20 years. She started studying Internet addiction in 1995 and founded the Center for Internet Addiction. She is a professor at St. Bonaventure University and has published numerous articles and books including as Caught in the Net, the first to identify Internet addiction available in nine languages, Tangled in the Web, Breaking Free of the Web, and Internet addiction: A Handbook and Guide for Evaluation and Treatment available in five languages.

THE IMPACT ON SCHOOL LIBRARIES OF GOING 1:1
With the advent of new technology, educators are changing the way they use technology devices in the classroom. An increasing number of school districts are implementing 1:1 initiatives in which each student has a technology device at his or her disposal. In order to discover how school libraries have been impacted, a survey was sent out to school librarians in schools with 1:1 initiatives in place. The survey asked questions to determine the impact seen thus far, how school demographics fit in, and how school libraries have evolved in response to the implementation of 1:1 computing. The results of the survey showed half of responding librarians experienced a reduction in library usage, some reported continued collaborative efforts with faculty, and others reported the need to be innovative in order to retain relevance.
