Self-Taught Language A: Diagnostic Assessment

Diagnostic Assessment

The Diagnostic Assessment, conducted by the SSST coordinator at the end of MYP Year 5 (Grade 10), provides an opportunity to evaluate whether students interested in the Language A SSST program possess the necessary proficiency in their chosen language. It is a one-time assessment, graded by experienced IB literature teachers who will also offer detailed feedback. Based on the results of this assessment, we will make a recommendation regarding the suitability of the Language A SSST course for the student.

Feedback will include:

  • Performance against the IB assessment criteria
  • Areas of strength
  • Areas of weakness
  • General recommendation

In addition to the questionnaire below, students will provide evidence of their reading comprehension, academic writing and speaking skills.

Reading & Writing

Example assessment:

Students will receive a 1-2 page sample text: poem, prose, lay or non-fiction excerpt

Read the text a few times

Hand-write a 'free response' to the extract.  You can write down any reactions or thoughts that come to mind, personal experiences linked to the extract, comments on the writer's style, on a character, on the plot etc ...  You may use the questions at the bottom of the extract in order to write your response, but you are not limited by these questions.

Make an effort to write at least 500 words (if possible, more)

Speaking

Example assessment:

Record an audio clip of up to 10 minutes

You must talk about a work of literature that you have read, or a movie or TV series that you have watched and enjoyed, etc.

Make an effort to include academic language, literary elements and avoid informal conversational words
