Self-Taught Language A: Course Overview

IB DP Self-Taught School Supported Language A: Literature

Course Description: The IB Diploma Programme (DP) Self-Taught School Supported Language A: Literature course is designed for students who wish to study their home language or another language in which they are proficient. This course allows students to explore a wide range of literary works from their chosen language, fostering a deep appreciation for literature and enhancing their analytical and critical thinking skills.

Course Structure: The course is divided into three main areas of exploration:

  1. Readers, Writers, and Texts: Students examine the relationship between readers, writers, and texts, exploring how meaning is constructed and interpreted.
  2. Time and Space: This area focuses on the context in which literary works are produced and received, considering historical, cultural, and social influences.
  3. Intertextuality: Students explore connections between texts, understanding how literature can be influenced by and respond to other works.

Assessment: Students will be assessed through a combination of written assignments, oral presentations, and examinations. The assessments are designed to evaluate students’ understanding of literary concepts, their ability to analyze texts, and their proficiency in expressing their ideas clearly and coherently.

Support System: The self-taught nature of the course requires students to be highly motivated and independent learners. However, they will receive support from a designated tutor, who will guide them through the course requirements and provide feedback on their progress as well as the school SSST coordinator. Additionally, students may collaborate with other students and parents to enhance their learning experience.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students will:

  • Develop a deep understanding and appreciation of literature in their chosen language.
  • Enhance their analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Improve their ability to express ideas clearly and effectively in both written and oral forms.
  • Gain insights into the cultural, historical, and social contexts of literary works.
  • Foster a lifelong love for reading and literature.
