G07: L&L Changing Times Changing Voices: Groovy 1960's

The 60s ushered in a counterculture revolution, where accepted social norms were being challenged and re-written.

This was seen in the arts more than anywhere (or anything) else, and was especially prominent in fashion, accessories, and - of course, hairstyles.

The 1960s have a special place in our hearts. It takes us back to a time of hippies and flower pants and excellent hairstyles.

1960s fashion was bi-polar in just about every way. The early sixties were more reminiscent of the 1950s — conservative and restrained; certainly more classic in style and design.

The late 1960s were the exact opposite. Bright, swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were commonplace. Woman wore unbelievably short skirts and men wore tunics and capes. The foray into fantasy would not have been believed by people just a decade earlier.

Kids couldn’t wait until Christmas, their birthday or some other gift giving holiday. Many homes in America had a Sears catalog with pages that had bee dog-eared in hopes of receiving a toy from that very page.

Does it get any better than music in the 1960s? It was a time where it seemed no one could write a bad song.

Think of all the unbelievable musicians that captured our imaginations. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, we could go on for days.

Following WWII, the world saw drastic changes politically, in its population, and of course, in technology. The world’s population was rapidly increasing with post-war babies from the 1950s reaching adulthood in the 1960s and the world was becoming much smaller thanks to the availability of travel. Even more so technology continued to improve the quality of life of people across the planet.

The information presented below should make us aware of the important contributions made for scientific development in the 1960s.

In my humble opinion, cars from the 1960s are the best. Not too modern, not too old. Just right. Mustang. Camaro. Road Runner. The list goes on and on.

By the middle of the 20th century, a confluence of factors–a rise in supermarkets and pre-packaged food, an advertising boom, a renewed fascination with classical European cooking, extreme growth in the middle class, among others–led to a truly singular culinary milieu. Even today, and even if you didn’t live through it the first time, chances are you can recognize some 1950s and 1960s food that America has now forgotten.
