G07: I&S Forces of Nature: Tornado Investigation

he deadliest tornado in U.S. history was the Tri-State Tornado of 1925, also called the Great Tri-State Tornado. A catastrophic storm that traveled from southeastern Missouri through southern Illinois and into southwestern Indiana on March 18, 1925, the storm completely destroyed a number of towns and caused 695 deaths.

On March 18, 1925 a dark “smokey fog” touched down approximately three miles northwest of Ellington, Missouri. It would become known as the Tri-State Tornado. By all accounts the Tri-State Tornado was one for the record books.

The above video pulls together several pieces of footage that look like something you would see in "tornado alley" (except for the architecture, of course). The strong tornado shown in the videos took place on Sunday, 7-31-11 in Blagoveshchensk, Russia.

Most of the passengers on the Eastern Star cruise ship had gone to bed. A violent storm struck and rain pounded the windows with such force that water seeped into the cabins, survivor Zhang Hui told Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency.

The tornado outbreak of 24–25 June 1967 remains the second deadliest tornado outbreak over Europe since 1950 after the tornado outbreak of 9 June 1984 over Russia. Over the course of two days, one F2 tornado, four F3 tornadoes, one F4 tornado, and one F5 tornado struck France, Belgium and Holland resulting in 15 fatalities and 234 injuries.

The Daulatpur–Saturia tornado occurred in Manikganj District, Bangladesh on April 26, 1989. It was the deadliest tornado in Bangladesh's history. There is great uncertainty about the death toll, but estimates indicate that it was devastating and that it killed approximately 1,300 people, which would make it the deadliest tornado in history.

Some estimates categorized this torndo as EF-5 - with wind speed over 200 mph. According to official estimates the death toll was about 1,300 and with total damage amounting to around $1.5 million.
