WAB Wild: Grade 6

General Introduction

As part of the MYP Physical Education curriculum, Grade 6 will be taking an experiential outdoor education unit.

This unit is named ‘The Call of the Wild’. We hope to be able to answer the unit question: Why do people go into the wilderness?

All students will be learning the skills required for travelling safely in the mountains, and how this environment can provide opportunities for recreation, challenge and lifelong learning.

Throughout this unit students will:

  • Gain an understanding of the safety, organization & communication systems used in the mountains, and the planning required for an expedition.
  • Develop basic navigation skills using map, compass and GPS.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the use of two-way radio, first aid and personal safety in a wilderness setting.
  • Understand how individuals and groups respond to challenge and see how to transfer that learning to other situations in their lives.
  • Gain an appreciation of the need to preserve and maintain natural resources.
  • Gain a better understanding of the balance that exists in nature.
  • By staying at Miao Liang, understand what it is like to live with a reduced impact on the environment.

The practical component to this program is a 3-day, 2-night expedition at WAB’s Miao Liang Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre. Students will encounter group and individual challenges, applying new skills in a safe and cooperative environment with the WAB Wild team.
The camp is a MYP Physical Education Unit of Work, and as such it is a mandatory part of the curriculum. It is formally assessed for Criteria A and D; students must attend the camp to receive a grade for this unit.
