Climbing Checks and Signals

Pre Climb Safety Check

Make sure to practice the “buddy system” with your partner before attempting to climb.  Check each others equipment and follow the ABCDE safety check)!

A-        Anchors – Make sure that both the climber and belayer are attached to the same rope and anchors by pulling down on the rope. Climber and belayer should also visually check to make sure the belayer is properly secured to the ground anchor system.  Look for ropes that are twisted or caught on holds.

B-        Buckles – Make sure that all buckles have been closed properly and that they are double backed before climbing.

C-        Carabiner and Knots – Make sure the carabiners are locked and the climber’s figure 8 knot is tied correctly.

D-        Device – Check to make sure that the belayer is properly clipped in to the belay device.

E-        End / Everything Else – Check to make sure that the climber is tied in correctly to the harness and is ready to climb. Ensure that the back-up belayer is ready if one is used.

Belay Signals

Communication among climbers is crucial for the safety of the climbing team.  For that reason a series of verbal commands were created to help climbers and belayer’s communicate effectively.   You should learn and use these commands when climbing.

Climber: ‘On Belay?’ – Asks the belayer if the belayer is ready to belay.

Belayer: ‘Belay On’ – Indicates that the belayer is ready to belay and has the climber on belay.

Climber: ‘Climbing’ – Tells the belayer that he / she is about to start climbing.

Belayer: ‘Climb On’ – Confirms that the belayer is aware that the climber is climbing and is prepared to catch them if the climber falls.

Climber:  ‘Falling’

Belayer: Use the appropriate method to arrest fall.

Climber: “Off belay”

Belayer: “Belay off”

*"Slack" and "Takeare common commands used by the climber to notify the belayer as to the amount of slack is in the rope.
