Graphic Design and National IdentityThis information design project engages with the relationship between graphic design and national identity. The graphic identities designed for the Olympic Games are the focus of this research.
The first poster shows a breakdown of the 'Dimensions of Culture' theory, developed by Dutch analyst Geert Hofstede. In order to define how values are influenced by culture he identified five primary dimensions that show how similar or different one country is from another. Here, the 18 countries that have hosted the Games so far are compared to each other.
The second poster analyses key issues represented in the graphics of the Games. Six colour coded symbols representing topics (politics, culture, geography, national colours, references to art/literature and historical symbols) are positioned according to their prominence in the graphic identity of a given host country.
