Elementary Library: Inquiry

What is Inquiry?

IB learning focuses on inquiry, or the desire to learn more, which begins by asking questions. Students are encouraged to think critically about the scenario in front of them and document any questions they may have.

Inquirers have a natural curiosity and learn to acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. Students actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout life. The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the outside world.

Kath Murdoch's Inquiry Cycle

Inquiry is about what learners do and is often times a fluid, sometimes messy and complex process. The Inquiry Cycle is to guide the teacher's and learner's thinking  towards a more thoughtful process that assists students to move from the known into the unknown and to engage in fruitful dialogue building critical thinking skills. Critical thinking assists with thinking outside the box, analyzing information, crafting innovative solutions, and systematic planning.
