The beginning of the year is full of promise – a whole year ahead of you to make a fresh start. For those of you who enthusiastically began 2022 with a New Year’s Resolution to get fit (which may have since been ignored), the upcoming Chinese New Year gives us another opportunity to make good on our promise (or at the very least, begin anew).
Now that we are back on Online Learning, there's even more reason to make movement a part of your daily routine.
Check out these tried and tested apps to get your body moving!

Hikers
If you like Hiking, try AllTrails: Hike, Bike & Run (in-app purchases). AllTrails crowdsources trails to try, with reviews and photos to help you uncover new places to explore. Maps can be downloaded for when phone signals don’t quite reach – perfect for those out-of-the-way places. Activities such as hiking, mountain biking, running, bird-watching, and more are all supported. Families will appreciate the family-friendly trails, and pet-lovers will be thankful for the Dog-friendly trail suggestions.
Bikers
Those cyclists among us will no doubt appreciate the app Strava Training: run, ride & swim (in-app purchases), especially when paired with an Apple Watch or other GPS tracker. Track your rides, compare them over time, find popular routes and participate in challenges.
Runners
There’s something out there for everyone when it comes to running apps. Beginners may tune into the popular NHS Couch to 5K app (free) – guaranteed to get you to where you need to go without pushing you beyond your limits.
Those who need extra motivation may well find it with Zombies, Run (free), an immersive audio and storytelling adventure app that has you literally running from the zombies you hear chasing you through your headphones.
Another free app that will help motivate you with cheering from friends and mindful meditations is Nike Run Club: Running Coach. Use guided runs from Nike coaches, track routes with iPhone/Apple Watch and make use of training plans and challenges.
Yoga Enthusiasts
Voted best yoga app of 2021, Glo is a daily online yoga, meditation, Pilates & Fitness app designed to help you feel better in body and mind. Glo has a 7-day free trial, but after that, requires a pro subscription, so perhaps it is best for more serious users. It has a rating of 4.9 on the app store, with over 26k reviews, so there is obviously a lot to explore and benefit from with Glo! Classes are both live and on-demand.
Live & On-Demand Classes
FitOn (free, in-app purchases) is an app that can customize workouts to your priorities. Join live workouts, or choose from on-demand classes in a range of disciplines (Pilates, HIIT, toning, yoga, barre stretching) with expert trainers and celebrities such as Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness. Workouts are 100% free (though there is a pro plan which includes meal plans, recipes, downloads, video workouts with friends, and more).
For Serious Apple Fans
Apple Fitness+ is the go-to app for Apple Devotees, as it integrates with devices such as Apple TV and Apple Watch to provide a service with an impressive level of data. Workouts can be streamed to Apple TV, and, when connected to an Apple Watch, can show live metrics on screen. With workouts available across a range of disciplines, including treadmill, HIIT, rowing, cycling, dance, yoga, core, strength, and mindful cooldown, there is a little something for everyone. Apple has also started offering collections, featuring a curated collection of workouts to help users achieve their goals. Time to Walk is another feature of Apple Fitness +, where influential people share stories about their lives as they take a walk.
Hopefully, you will find a bit of motivation in these apps to make the Year of the Tiger a healthy and active one!
