Roles of Supervisors and Mentors

As of 2024-2024, grade 10 students at WAB are supported by both their project supervisor and grade 10 mentor through the personal project process. These two people support students in unique but complementary ways. The purpose of both the supervisor and mentor is to guide students during the personal project journey, both in terms of project planning and development and in developing Approaches to learning (ATL) skills through the process.

Below is a outline of the different responsibilities of project supervisors and grade 10 mentors in supporting students:

  • helping students identify a suitable project topic (learning and product goal) that supports rigorous inquiry but that is doable within the project time frame
  • ensuring the chosen project topic satisfies appropriate legal & ethical standards with regard to health and safety, confidentiality, human rights, animal welfare and environmental issues
  • Conducting 3 mandatory meetings with students throughout course of project
  • providing formative feedback throughout the process
  • ensuring requirements for academic integrity are met
  • confirming the authenticity of work submitted
  • assessing the personal project using the criteria in this guide
  • participating in the standardization of the assessment process.
  • giving guidelines about the project & process requirements
  • referring to WAB’s timetable with deadlines
  • explaining the assessment criteria for the project
  • giving advice on how to keep & curate evidence of the process
  • emphasizing the importance of personal analysis & reflection
  • giving students general guidelines about the personal project posted in Teams
  • informing and reminding students of WAB’s P2 timetable & deadlines
  • Ensuring students have completed three mandatory meetings with supervisors and generally monitoring progress throughout the process
  • informing students of general information about project assessment criteria
  • informing students on how to keep and use a process journal on MyTime
  • supporting personal analysis & reflection throughout the process
  • formative feedback on student's ability to meet deadlines and their approaches to learning throughout the project
  • informing students about requirements for academic honesty.

 

                                    

Project supervisors:

  • Help students identify a suitable project topic that
    • includes a learning and product goal
    • is suitably rigorous and doable within the time frame
    • is ethical and safe
    • is developed with research
  • Help students develop product success criteria that involve research
  • Help students create an appropriate plan for achieving product success criteria
  • Conducting 3 mandatory meetings with students throughout course of project (teachers add digital signatures to MyTime for each meeting)
    • Mandatory Meeting 1
      • check that students understand the assessment criteria and timeline for project
      • identify an appropriate project topic, including learning and product goal
      • ensure students are conducting research
      • ensure students are completing reflections in Process Journal on MyTime
      • guide students in identifying product success criteria and a plan for achieving product
      • provide formative 
    • Mandatory Meeting 2
      • confirm student is working toward toward achieving product success criteria
      • ensure student is working according to plan established
      • review student reflections in Process Journal on MyTime and their role in report 
      • help student identify 2-3 approaches to learning skills relevant to learning goal
      • help identify 2-3 approaches to learning skills relevant to product goal
      • guide student in beginning to write report and give formative feedback on work to date
    • Mandatory Meeting 3
      • ensure student is working on report effectively and give formative feedback on report work to date
      • confirm authenticity of student work by completing the academic honesty form on MyTime
  • assess student personal project report using the criteria
  • participating in the standardization of the assessment process.
