Getting Started with Research for Goals

Starting Research for Project Learning &/or Product Goals

What do you need to know, learn or discover to successfully identify a meaningful learning and product goal?  You can use this document with a partner or group as practice, to walk through the process of creating a research plan, and when you’re ready to develop your own research process, you can use it to direct your project.

Community Context:

Media

What media sources (articles, books, websites, videos, etc.) might have information that will help you develop your project? In what ways will different media help you in your research?

Interviews

Think of a person (a person in a role or a specific individual) who is knowledgeable about your topic – someone at school, in the community, or who you might be able to contact in some way.  Brainstorm at least four questions you’d ask if you were to interview this person.

Survey

Surveys help get a sense of what people think or feel about a topic, how they view and issue and how you can help or influence their thoughts or behaviors through your project.  Think about who you’d like to survey.  Students?  Your friends, or the whole school?  Family members?  Neighbors?  Would you like to put a survey on Facebook and see how far it goes?

Think about how who you’d like to survey, how many surveys you would need to investigate your topic, and what questions you’d ask in your survey.

Observation and Experience

How could you gather information about your topic through your own experiences and observations?  Who or what groups would you need to observe?  Where would you go? How will you keep track of and use the information you acquire about your topic?
