Personal Project: Overview of Research

Personal Project information and support for teachers and students

Overview of Research

Personal Project Research Research Expectations

Research is a core aspect of the personal project. To help guide students through the process, we have set minimum expectations for research at each phase of the project experience. Of course, students may (& likely will) go above and beyond these minimum expectations. All research and sources should be documented in Noodle Tools (login with Microsoft 365)

Goal Development & Planning Phase

This is likely where students will spend the majority of their research efforts. Developing goals and success criteria in particular require research, of course this could be primary or secondary research.

Criterion A i. state a learning goal for the project and explain how a personal interest led to that goal

Students should develop 1-2 lines of inquiry (questions) that apply to each area below. Each line of inquiry should have minimum 1-2 sources annotated in Noodle Tools.

  1. personal interest, passion, skill or talent(s) area
  2. “we factor” (SDG targets, Social Justice Framework standard, etc.)
  3. community asset mapping

TOTAL MINIMUM SOURCES: 3

DEADLINE: 21 October 2024 (when report section is due)

Criterion A ii. state an intended product and develop appropriate success criteria for the product

Students should develop a line of inquiry (questions) for each of the project success criteria (typically 3-5 success criteria). Each line of inquriy should have at least one source annotated in Noodle Tools.

TOTAL MINIMUM SOURCES: 3-5

DEADLINE: 21 October 2024 (when report section is due)

Explaining How Skills Were Applied

Criterion B i.explain how ATL skills were applied to help achieve their learning goal

Students should develop at least 2 lines of inquiry (questions) for each ATL skill area selected, each should be focused on a different specific ATL skill applied to achieving the learning goal. This section should have at least one source annotated in Noodle Tools.

TOTAL MINIMUM SOURCES: 1

DEADLINE: 6 January 2025 (when report section is due)

Criterion B ii.explain how ATL skills were applied to help achieve their product (success criteria)

As with the learning goal, students should develop at least 2 lines of inquiry (questions) for each ATL skill area selected, each should be focused on a different specific ATL skill applied to achieving the learning goal. This section should have at least one source annotated in Noodle Tools.

TOTAL MINIMUM SOURCES: 1

DEADLINE: 6 January 2025 (when report section is due)

Impact on Students and Their Learning

Criterion C i.explain the impact of the project on themselves or their learning

Students should develop 2 lines of inquiry (questions) for how the project experience impacted them as a learner, focusing on the IB Learner Profile Attributes. They should evelop 2 lines of inquiry (questions) on how the project experience impacted them in terms of knowledge and understanding of the subject or topic area of focus. This section should have at least one source annotated in Noodle Tools.

TOTAL MINIMUM SOURCES: 1

DEADLINE: 17 February 2025 (when report section is due)

Annotated Bibliographies

Noodle Tools will compile and generate an annotated bibliography for use in the project report. Students enter annotations directly into Noodle Tools as they are conducting research, this includes primary research like interviews.
